The Panthers returned to the postseason last year behind their 2nd-ranked defense. And while that unit has most of its parts still intact, it’s been picked apart the last month.

Pro Bowl defensive end Greg Hardy remains in NFL limbo, and it’s unlikely he’ll be back anytime soon. So it’s up to the guys currently on the roster to figure out how they can turn the switch back to a defense that somewhat resembles last year’s bunch.

Below is a look at where the Panthers ranked after Week 6 last year, and where they stand heading into Sunday’s game in Green Bay.

After Week 6 2013 NFL Rank 2014 NFL Rank
Yards Allowed 299.2 3rd 392.5 26th
Points Allowed 13.6 2nd 26.2 24th
Rushing Yards Allowed 88.8 4th 140.2 26th
Passing Yards Allowed 210.4 7th 252.3 20th

OTHER NOTES
  • The Panthers, who had their bye in Week 4 last year, had 15 sacks after Week 6. This season, they have 13 sacks through six games.
  • The Panthers defense is:
    • 31st on 3rd down (allowing a 50 percent conversion rate)
    • tied for 27th with 12 passing touchdowns allowed
    • 26th with 46 penalties
    • tied for 2nd in allowing runs of 20+ yards (7)
    • 1st in allowing runs of 40+ yards (4)
  • The best Panthers’ defensive stats through Week 6:
    • they’re tied for 5th with seven interceptions
    • they’re tied for 5th with a +5 turnover margin
  • Offensively, the Panthers are 28th in rushing yards per game. They were 7th through Week 6 last year. Surprisingly, their passing game is tied for 12th, up 15 spots from a year ago at this time.
  • A couple individual stats:
    • Among tight ends, Greg Olsen is 2nd in receiving yards and 3rd in both receptions and touchdowns.
    • Linebacker Luke Kuechly remains the league leader with 74 tackles.

BlackBlueReview The Panthers won’t admit it, but part of the reason the defense is so bad this year is they missing Captain Munnerlyn and

BlackBlueReview Johnson getting doubled and Addison/Horton/Ealy getting no pressure means secondary gets exposed

BlackBlueReview but check out our record, we are doing relatively well, love to see breakdown of defense 1st and 2nd half

BlackBlueReview when the team gets constant pressure things like the second half of the Bears game happens

BlackBlueReview Mike Mitchell both of them were much better tacklers especially Mitchell, who is a much better tackler then Roman Harper.

BlackBlueReview I think it’s a combination of Hardy and Mitchell

  • VagusNC

BlackBlueReview it’s a speed issue. Let’s not forget Mitchell’s suspect angles and open field tackling.

BlackBlueReview the difference is the Big plays their giving up. Last year it wasn’t happening.

BlackBlueReview remove the big runs from there stats and the run D isn’t that bad. #BIGPLAYSAREKILLING’EM

    DillanShaffer of course!

BlackBlueReview looking back, Mike Mitchell is missed at S, esp against the run.

@VagusNC BlackBlueReview  definitely a speed issue with almost all the DBs, very noticeable how DeCoud had no chance of catching Bernard on that touchdown run.

Imo if you go back and look at the Detroit and the Tampa game the secondary wasn’t the problem. These guys were brought in to compliment our front 7/ pass rush. Sane thing happens in new Orleans last year when they were able to negate the pass rush and pick apart our secondary. One positives is the offense is starting to come together and Rivera will find a way to get this defense to work. I’m still optimistic we get Greg back next month.

@sportguyshow BlackBlueReview MItchell graded out as one of the worst run defending DB’s last year and he frequently missed tackles in space. Bene has played well in place of Munnerlyn at the nickel but he’s hurt.
