Panthers Make Pair of Moves on Offensive Line

The Carolina Panthers had a busy Tuesday, cutting veteran defensive linemen Charles Johnson and Dwan Edwards while making two moves on the offensive line. Those featured a new deal for Chris Scott and a goodbye to Nate Chandler.

Scott, a versatile backup who appeared in 31 games the past three seasons, signed his fourth straight 1-year contract.

Chandler, who signed a 3-year, $4.55 million extension after the 2013 season, struggled to stay healthy. The converted defensive tackle started 11 games at right tackle in 2014 until his year was cut short with a knee injury. He then spent all of this past season on injured reserve after his knee flared up in September.

By releasing Chandler ($1.3 million), Johnson ($11.0 million) and Edwards ($1.6 million), the Panthers saved themselves $13.9 million in 2016 cap space in a matter of hours. Or, in other words, an entire Josh Norman franchise tag.
