With 40 percent of their defensive tackles likely out for Sunday's game in New Orleans, the Carolina Panthers were going to have to make a roster move. For lovers of speed, it's unfortunate this one appears to have claimed arguably the fastest guy on the team.
According to the NFL's official transaction list, the Panthers on Thursday released receiver Damiere Byrd. The South Carolina product made the final 53-man roster with an impressive spring and summer but was inactive the first five games of the season.
The Panthers haven't yet made a corresponding move, but they'll probably add a defensive tackle. Rookie Vernon Butler is set to miss his third straight game with a high-ankle sprain, and on Thursday, coach Ron Rivera announced Paul Soliai had a sprained foot. That leaves Kawann Short, Star Lotulelei and Kyle Love as their only healthy tackles.
The Panthers have one tackle on the practice squad — Eric Crume. They could promote him or look outside for a late-week add.
If Byrd clears waivers, he'll likely be signed back on the roster or practice squad.
Seriously? I am really starting to question the moves that the Panthers coaching staff are making this year. I think the coaches have more of a super bowl hangover than the players do. I guess we just have to “keep trustin” in Gettlemen and hope the Panthers Keep Poundin!
It’s def a frustrating season. And with offense lacking playmakers it be nice to see DByrd get the chance Bersin has. But I’m laying in a Candlewood Suite no where near Charlotte so I’m not really qualified lol.
(Palm face.)
Seriously, Colin Jone must have a Hoover file on Gettleman or something.
