The Dreadful Numbers Behind the Panthers’ Slow Starts

There are plenty of stats that reveal reasons for the Panthers’ struggles this year, but you can find some of the most stunning in this chart:

PANTHERS’ POINTS SCORED PER QUARTER, 2014

Week Opponent 1st Qtr 2nd Qtr 3rd Qtr 4th Qtr
1 TB 0 10 0 10
2 DET 0 6 7 11
3 PIT 3 0 3 13
4 BAL 0 7 3 0
5 CHI 7 7 7 10
6 CIN 7 3 14 10
7 GB 0 3 0 14
8 SEA 3 3 0 3
9 NO 0 0 7 3
10 PHI 7 0 0 14
11 ATL 0 3 0 14
TOTAL POINTS 27 42 41 102
AVG/GAME (NFL RANK) 2.5 (32nd) 3.8 (28th) 3.7 (23rd) 9.3 (2nd)

Paltry isn’t a strong enough word to describe the Panthers’ 1st-quarter average of 2.5 points, which ranks dead last in the NFL. They’ve scored just three touchdowns in the opening quarter, and they’ve been shutout six times. When you combine the first two quarters, the numbers don’t get much better. The Panthers have scored 69 points in the 1st half for an average of 6.3 per game. Only the winless Raiders (6.0) have a worse average. On the surface, the good news is the Panthers are turning it on in crunch time. But 41 of their 102 4th-quarter points have come in blowout losses to the Steelers (13), Packers (14) and Eagles (14). That leaves the Panthers with 51 4th-quarter points in closer games, which would still be their highest total of any quarter. The defense certainly isn’t innocent. After giving up just 110 points in the 1st half all of last season, they’ve already allowed 150 in the 1st half this year. But because the offense is scoring at such a low rate early, what the Panthers do late is often irrelevant.
