Good, Average, Bad: A 3-Player Breakdown of Panthers at Titans

The Good

OT Donald Hawkins

Concerns about Carolina’s offensive line depth grew after the preseason opener in Baltimore, so it was encouraging to see the backups play better against the Titans.

Let’s highlight the play of LT Donald Hawkins, who’s taken over second-team duties from David Foucault.

On this first play, the edge rusher tried to bull rush Hawkins, but he gets good hand placement and then anchors to prevent any disruption:

Next, the Titans execute a stunt between the DT and DE. Hawkins passes off the DE to G David Yankey. Hawkins then transitions to land a punch to the DT, giving QB Derek Anderson a clean pocket:

Here, Anderson completes a bubble screen to WR Kevin Norwood. Watch Hawkins display his athleticism by sprinting in front of Norwood to block the LB, allowing Norwood enough room to pick up a first down:

Finally, here’s a look at Hawkins as a run blocker, creating a for RB Cameron Artis-Payne on the left side:

I like a lot of things I’m seeing from our rookies and second stringers. Simonson kind of let me down but hey, this is what the preseason is for right? Ironing out the wrinkles in their game. Hawkins looked damn good and here’s hoping Worley is a quick study. Good game.

Hawkins needed a game like that and Sandland has just been disappointing. I would like to see Deaver & Lucas get some earlier reps with the 1st & 2nd units to see what they can do. I was thrilled when they got Sanchez in the 5th round being a Big 12 follower. I thought he would go much sooner. Bene, Sanchez, & Shaq make me feel real comfortable about the nickle position.

I am curious what they will do once Johnson has to come off PUP and who might make the roster that they might potentially cut to place Johnson on the roster when that time comes.

Great job by who ever wrote the article. Would love to see Mr. Marshall highlight some of Damiere Byrd’s plays from the Titans game or someone from the media because it’s worth noting.

He was out in space giving good blocks at times during the game, the two potential touchdowns missed after he beat the coverage deep and in the back of the end zone had it not been for bad passes, and some of the catches he made throughout.

Very under rated and under the radar performance I thought the stats didn’t do justice to.

Yup. Love that bubble screen blocking.
