Good, Average, Bad: A 3-Player Breakdown of Panthers at Titans

The Average

CB Zack Sanchez

Sanchez was mostly solid against the Titans, but the rookie also stumbled into a couple teaching moments.

Let’s start with some good.

The Panthers love Sanchez’s ball-hawking skills and here he completes a real-life tip drill started by LB A.J. Klein:

Next, the Panthers are in a cover 3 zone. As the nickel defender, Sanchez is responsible for the flat, but he’s a second late anticipating the hitch route. It’s not a bad play, but it may have been another interception if he hit the flat quicker:

Finally, the Panthers are playing a cover 1 robber defense with the CBs in off-man coverage. Sanchez gets baited by the play action as WR Harry Douglas slips by with a corner route. Credit also goes to QB Marcus Mariota, who threw a perfectly placed pass:

Donald Hawkins has been on the radar since OTAs

I like a lot of things I’m seeing from our rookies and second stringers. Simonson kind of let me down but hey, this is what the preseason is for right? Ironing out the wrinkles in their game. Hawkins looked damn good and here’s hoping Worley is a quick study. Good game.

Hawkins needed a game like that and Sandland has just been disappointing. I would like to see Deaver & Lucas get some earlier reps with the 1st & 2nd units to see what they can do. I was thrilled when they got Sanchez in the 5th round being a Big 12 follower. I thought he would go much sooner. Bene, Sanchez, & Shaq make me feel real comfortable about the nickle position.

I am curious what they will do once Johnson has to come off PUP and who might make the roster that they might potentially cut to place Johnson on the roster when that time comes.

Great job by who ever wrote the article. Would love to see Mr. Marshall highlight some of Damiere Byrd’s plays from the Titans game or someone from the media because it’s worth noting.

He was out in space giving good blocks at times during the game, the two potential touchdowns missed after he beat the coverage deep and in the back of the end zone had it not been for bad passes, and some of the catches he made throughout.

Very under rated and under the radar performance I thought the stats didn’t do justice to.

Yup. Love that bubble screen blocking.
