3 Quick Reactions on Ted Ginn’s Return

Ted Ginn Picked the Better Situation

A source close to Ginn told me two weeks ago that after he was released from Arizona, his hope was to finally play for the Browns. He’s now shunned his hometown team in back-to-back offseasons. That same source confirmed Monday morning that Ginn chose the Panthers, and not surprisingly a big reason is they offer a much better football opportunity than the wayward Browns.

The Panthers Aren’t Done Adding Receivers

Ginn’s (re)addition doesn’t mean the Panthers will head into training camp with a receiving corps of just him, Kelvin Benjamin, Jerricho Cotchery, Corey Brown and Brenton Bersin. Even though they haven’t planned to spend on the top wideouts in free agency, they do have interest in some guys in the second and third waves. Plus, the draft is stacked with options.

Dave Gettleman is 2-for-2

The Panthers targeted offensive tackle Michael Oher and Ginn early, hoping to land them by the time free agency opens Tuesday afternoon. Not only do they help in positions of need, but neither will count against Carolina’s potential compensatory picks next year. Last offseason didn’t go as planned for general manager Dave Gettleman, but so far he’s batting .1000.

Keep remembering “The Catch” during the Primetime game at home against New England.”Newton firing, it’s caught, he’s on the run, inside the ten, TED GINN!!!!” lol!

It’s “Back to the Future”, without a happy ending.

Ginn won’t be able to live up to fans unreasonable expectations. He’ll be an improvement over Bersin as a punt returner (anyone would be), but he only averaged around 19 yards on kickoff returns last season, and is approaching the end of his career. Fans have forgotten his drops as a WR, and rather than being a starter, he’ll probably be their 5th or 6th WR, competing with Brown at “slot” receiver.

Whether it’s a good or bad signing depends on the length of the contact (hopefully only 1 or 2 years, and no more), and the amount (I hope it’s low).

UPDATE: The Panthers greatly overpaid for Ginn ($4.2 million in salary for 2 years was about right, but an additional $1.7 million signing bonus, plus $1.5 million in incentives, is way over the top), an aging return man.
