Carolina Panthers News and Coverage for the Digital Age

Recapping Monday’s Six Panthers’ Moves

The Carolina Panthers had a busy free agency eve. They made six moves Monday, and while none were earth-shattering, some will help fill in key spots. In total, the Panthers have handed out nine contracts–not including TE Greg Olsen’s extension–before Tuesday’s free agency kickoff. That’s four more than up to this point last season and six more than in 2013.Here’s a recap of Monday’s moves:WR Ted Ginn, free agent, 2-year contract: The Panthers beat out multiple teams for Ginn, including his hometown Browns. It’s not a marquee signing, but it means Carolina won’t have to reach for a returner/speed receiver during free agency or the draft. That doesn’t mean they’re done searching for wideouts, but Ginn lets them check off a couple boxes before free agency even begins.RB Fozzy Whittaker, exclusive rights free agent, 2-year contract: While general manager Dave Gettleman made an error that lost the Panthers RB Tyler Gaffney last July, Whittaker’s emergence should help ease the pain. Whittaker was who Gettleman brought in after he put Gaffney on waivers and before the Patriots ‘stole’ the sixth-rounder. With DeAngelo Williams on his way out, Whittaker moves up a rung on the depth chart. The Panthers could add a back in the next couple weeks or months, but Whittaker is Jonathan Stewart’s backup for now.QB Joe Webb, would-have-been unrestricted free agent, 1-year contract: Webb’s versatility is key, but this could be a chemistry thing, too. He became good friends with QB Cam Newton and WR Corey Brown last year, an example of relationships the Panthers are hoping blossom in their locker room. Gettleman wasn’t a fan of keeping three quarterbacks on the roster before he used Webb as Newton insurance last year, so Webb isn’t guaranteed a spot come Week 1. But his ability to help out on special teams and receiver made him a worthwhile re-signing.WR Brenton Bersin, exclusive rights free agent, 1-year contract: He went from a feel-good story to a guy Panthers fans feared whenever he stepped on the field. Bersin never looked comfortable as a punt returner, but to be fair, he was never supposed to be a real option for that role. With Ginn already in the mix and one or two receivers sure to be added by training camp, Bersin faces another fight to make the roster.C Brian Folkerts, exclusive rights free agent, 1-year contract: Bersin’s hair-cutting buddy has played only 55 snaps on offense in two seasons. But he can play both center and guard, and the Panthers value guys with that kind of versatility.LB Ben Jacobs, exclusive rights free agent, 1-year contract: His biggest moment last year came when he botched an assignment that led to a blocked punt in Minnesota, but the coaching staff appreciated how he immediately took ownership of the mistake. He went from practice squad in 2013 to a depth guy in 2014, and that’s likely his ceiling.

Some great moves to secure a handful of valuable players going into Free Agency. The Panthers have secured up most of the Major issues that were left after the end of 2014. There are definitely still plenty of places that need to improve, but I’m confident in where we are now and expect to be in even better position come April 30th!

Besides Olsen, not sure what other holes have been filed. A body in a spot doesn’t exactly mean its a worry free issue now.

Ted Ginn gives us a strong Punt/Kickoff returner along with another speed receiver to go with Corey Brown. He may not be a 1000 yd receiver but he can stretch defenses for Olsen/Benji underneath.
Bersin is a reliable situational receiver, he’s not flashy but he makes catches on critical downs.
Oher gives us a veteran presence to at least compete for LT, And hes a valid option to go to RT too if we do get someone that out performs him on the left from FA/Draft. He may not be as good as he was at Baltimore, or we may find that getting out from under his recent injuries is all it takes for him to get back to that form too.. either way he’s much better than we had with Bell
Whittaker gives us a solid performer that showed he could make some moves and get extra yards once he gets into the secondary.
Webb gives us one person who can fill in at QB, WR, and Special Teams… even if all he does is be a special teams ace that we can draw on if we have injuries at other positions that’s a huge value.
Folkerts and Jacobs are likely both at/near league minimum contracts, signing them just ensures no-one else does and gives us people that know the system to compete come training camp. I’d say it’s 50/50 that either make the 53 man roster, and that’s assuming we don’t hit their positions in the draft.

If you want superstar flashy names just look to our Recent Draft history. We haven’t even hit free agency yet, and our return worries are fixed, and may only get better, and we have a Left Tackle that is worthy to play in the NFL… He may not make any more Pro-Bowls but it’s better than having a guy that is as likely to be no more than a stop-gag for a team seeing injuries decimate their tackle position.

Bersin was a goat for Panther fans last season, but I think he has shown real potential as a receiver.

Do we have any details regarding the $$$ associated with these contracts? For instance, Webb made $795,000 last year I believe – that’s a lot to pay for another year of chemistry.

  • Panthers/Truth

Ginn isn’t the answer to their needs for a speed WR, he’s just a backup, with some drop problems. They still need a starting big/fast #2 WR.

Fozzy is just a #3 RB at best, and not big enough to be a full-time RB, if J-Stew goes down with an injury.
