Observations From Week 7
There were a lot of Eagles fans at the stadium last Sunday, but they were a relatively subdued bunch by their standards. I felt sorry for them in a way, buying an Eagles jersey when Chip Kelly is your coach is a dicey business. That roster changes more than Justin Bieber’s sports affiliations. These were the three most popular jerseys I saw:
Though I really wish we could have spotted this one:
So the Eagles gave up Nick Foles, a second-round pick and $13 million in cap space to sign Sam Bradford. That might go down as one of the worst trades in NFL history. Like this sort of bad:
Another bonus point for identifying this guy.
The list of defensive players the Panthers are going to have to pay is getting larger by the week. Kawann Short’s performance this season, particularly the past two weeks, has been remarkable. Remember when Panther fans couldn’t understand why we drafted back-to-back defensive tackles? Safe to say Dave Gettlemen knows more than fans.
Cam Newton was unlucky to be credited with three picks, though the one toward the sideline was brutal. A special mention to the offensive line, too. Did you know that that Panthers are No. 1 in the NFL in rushing? Ffurther kudos to Gettleman for finding the blend there. Note: This is where I resist the urge to embed a clip from “The Blind Side.”
The tailgate was an absolute banger last Sunday. We saw a lot of new faces. Long may it continue. You can see all the pictures here.
On to Week 8
Man, the Colts are a mess. If you haven’t been paying attention their owner is an admitted alcoholic with a history of arrests; their quarterback is either injured or regressing or both; their general manager made a series of big swings, many of which appear to be failing; and the GM hates the coach, the coach hates the GM. Then there was this:

Unbelievably, the Colts are still 65 percent favorites to win their division. I know the NFC South was bad last year, but the AFC South is stinking the league out this year, and has been one of the least competitive divisions in football for a number of years.
So why do I have a feeling of dread about this game? With Green Bay and a potential battle of undefeated teams on the horizon, playing a desperate and talented Colts teams seems tricky.
By the way, The Riot has a swanky new website. Thanks to Skookum Digital Works for the assistance. If you see our cover model at the tailgate, be sure to give him a big hug. He loves them:
We have big plans for the Monday tailgate. Give your bosses a heads up that Tuesday may not be the most productive day of your career. We aren’t endorsing faking a note from the doctor, but if I’ll just leave this here.
