Cardinals Beat Vikings, Stay Near Top of NFC

The Carolina Panthers have to win this weekend to maintain a two-game lead atop the NFC. That’s because the Cardinals got their work done Thursday night, holding off the Vikings, 23-20.

Even if Arizona had lost, the earliest the Panthers could have locked up the NFC’s top seed was Week 15. But the win keeps the Cardinals, who would own a potential tiebreaker over Carolina because of conference records, right on the Panthers’ heels.

The Vikings’ loss does give the Panthers two chances this weekend to at least clinch a first-round bye. They’d earn that with either a win or tie against the Falcons or with a Cowboys’ win or tie against the Packers.

I keep reading that the Packers need to lose or the Panthers still need to win to clinch a first round bye. With the Vikings loss the Panthers clinched a first round bye, am I right? The worst record we could have would be 12-4. The only other team that could be 12-4 would be the Packers who we own the tie-breaker over because we beat them.

      That seems right to me.

No we would lose the bye week if Carolina, Arizona and Green Bay would have a 12-4 record. in that case the tie-breaker over Green Bay would be useless.

      • Evan Dobrowolski

Why do you say that? How would Green Bay get the bye over us?

        • Patrick Gerling

Because when 3 or more teams have the same record, the head-to-head matchup only works if you have beaten every other team. But we haven’t beaten the Cards. So the next step would be the record against NFC opponents, where we would have a 8-4 (cause we would lose the next four games), and the Cards and Packers would have a 9-3 when they get to 12-4. Sorry I hope my english is right, because I´m german.
