Stats and Superlatives: Panthers Set More Inglorious Defensive Records

THE PANTHERS

  • Are 1-5 for the third time in coach Ron Rivera’s six seasons.

  • Became the first team in NFL history to allow two 450-yard passers in a three-game span.

  • Allowed more than 500 yards for the second time in three games. Before Week Four, they had allowed that many yards just twice in franchise history.

  • Allowed 40-plus points for the second time in three games. Before this season, they gave up 40-plus just nine times.

  • Allowed their most points in the first half (24) since they gave up 28 to Minnesota on 11/30/14.

  • Are 17-of-51 (33 percent) on third down the past four weeks. They were 16-of-30 (53 percent) in their first two games.

  • Have gone 50:20 without scoring a point in the first quarter.

  • Have scored touchdowns on 16 of their 21 (76 percent) drives in the red zone.

THE SAINTS

  • Snapped a three-game losing streak in series.

  • Improved to 11-1 at home in Oct. since 2009.

PANTHERS:

  • QB Cam Newton
    • Passed Jake Delhomme (19,258) for most passing yards in franchise history.
    • Tied DeAngelo Williams (46) for most rushing touchdowns in franchise history.
    • Had thrown 29 touchdowns and no interceptions in the red zone since the start of 2015 until he was picked off by Saints CB Sterling Moore in the 2nd quarter.
    • Tied his career-low with two rushes (3 other times, all in losses during the 2014 season).

  • WR Devin Funchess caught two of his six targets for 28 yards and a touchdown. So far this season, Funchess has caught just seven of his 19 targets.

  • TE Greg Olsen caught six of his seven targets for 94 yards. Through Sunday’s games, he ranks 2nd in the NFL with 610 receiving yards.

  • TE Ed Dickson scored his first touchdown since a 4-yard snag against the Falcons in Week 14 last year.

  • LB Luke Kuechly
    • Leads the NFL with 68 tackles.
    • Has double-digit tackles in all six games this season, tied for the longest streak of his career (2012).

  • DE Charles Johnson had his first sack of the season, which he shared with DE Mario Addison.

  • CB Teddy Williams grabbed his first career interception. It was just the Panthers’ second take-away in their past four games.

SAINTS:

  • QB Drew Brees
    • Threw four touchdown passes, upping his total to 31 in his past eight home games.
    • Passed for 465 yards, his 15th career 400-yard passing game. That puts him past Peyton Manning for the most all-time.

  • WR Brandin Cooks is the first player in NFL history with two touchdown catches of at least 85 yards in his team’s first five games of a season.
