As Cam Newton sat in the hospital Wednesday morning, he received a bit of good news from the NFL. The Panthers quarterback was named the NFC’s Offensive Player of the Week for the third time in his career.
Newton accounted for four touchdowns in the Panthers’ 41-10 route of the Saints on Sunday. He was 21-of-33 for 226 yards with three touchdown passes, and he added 83 yards on the ground, plus a scoring leap from two yards out.
It was the fourth time Newton had at least 200 passing yards, multiple passing touchdowns, 80-plus rushing yards and a rushing touchdown in the same game. Only two other players in NFL history have done the same, and Michael Vick and Russell Wilson done it just twice.
Newton’s third NFC Offensive Player of the Week award ties him with former running back Stephen Davis for most in Panthers’ history.
The news came down as media continued to gather outside Carolinas Medical Center, where Newton stayed overnight after his Tuesday car accident. He suffered two transverse process fractures in his lower back, but avoided any other internal injuries. He was eventually released around 11:15 a.m.
Newton has not yet been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Bucs, but backup Derek Anderson will likely fill in for the second time this season against Tampa Bay.
