Carolina Panthers News and Coverage for the Digital Age

What They’re Saying About the Panthers: Thurs., Oct. 29

A look at Carolina Panthers-related news and nuggets from around the web.

Brian Billick of NFL.com examines the pros and cons of Cam Newton’s game:

No quarterback in the NFL has a stronger arm. Newton does not have classic fundamentals when it comes to his drop, pocket movement or the use of his feet and hips to drive the ball. But he does have a fluid, smooth passing stroke — he just does it with the sheer power of his physical gifts. Newton is a “sight thrower”: If he has a clear view of his target, he can deliver the ball as accurately as anybody in the NFL.

David Newton of ESPN.com says a case can be made that Cam Newton is better than Andrew Luck:

Newton and Luck are close in terms of overall passer rating this season, Newton at 78.4 and Luck at 76.2.

The dimension Newton adds with his legs takes his game to another level. He’s rushed 54 times for 245 yards and four touchdowns. Luck has 21 carries for 127 yards and no touchdowns.

Joseph Person of the Charlotte Observer talks to Jared Allen about one of his few white whales:

Carolina Panthers defensive end Jared Allen has a long list of quarterbacks he’s sacked over his 12-year career. The Colts’ Andrew Luck isn’t on it.

Allen, then with Minnesota, faced Luck in 2012 during Luck’s second NFL game. Allen said he twice narrowly missed Luck, who passed for 224 yards in the Colts’ 23-20 victory.

Jeff Mezydlo of Yahoo.com previews the Panthers-Colts matchup:

Indianapolis (3-4) yielded a season-high 183 rushing yards in Sunday’s 27-21 home loss to New Orleans. The Colts also rank last by allowing an average of 408.6 total yards and are giving up 24.9 points per contest.

Though Indianapolis is in danger of dropping three straight for the first time since starting 0-13 in 2011, coach Chuck Pagano hasn’t lost faith but feels a sense of urgency.

Gil Brandt of NFL.com says he would like to see Carolina trade for Calvin Johnson:

The thing that might make 1-6 Detroit want to move Johnson — his high salary — is also the thing that makes trading him very difficult. However, this is about trades I’d like to see, and Johnson to the Panthers makes sense. 6-0 Carolina has obviously been pretty good, but the team needs a wide receiver, and I’m not sure how far the Panthers can get without adding help.

Shalise Manza Young of Yahoo Sports talks with Charles Tillman about his latest project:

In his first year with the Carolina Panthers after a dozen seasons with the Chicago Bears, cornerback Charles Tillman – you might know him better as Peanut – has gone a different route. “The Middle School Rules of Charles ‘Peanut’ Tillman”, being released on Sunday, focuses on Tillman’s upbringing and family, the mistakes he made and lessons he learned on his way to becoming a second-round draft pick and 13-year NFL veteran.
