Kept Wearing Hospital Bracelet
When Newton arrived at training camp in 2014, he was coming off ankle surgery, which proceeded a preseason which featured broken ribs. A few months later, he was crawling out of the side of his pickup truck.
So when he reported Spartanburg this summer, perhaps as healthy as he’s ever been as a pro, he kept around a reminder of his new perspective.
“I don’t wear it for a fashion sense; I wear it as a reminder that so many people worry about the things we just talked about, the negatives of ‘He’s gonna do this. Oh man, it’s too hot outside. Oh God, I’m gonna get sunburn,’ and not just appreciating that the sun is out.
“If it was raining, then people would have that talk. But I’m the type of person, especially with the things I went through the past few year, that I make the most and appreciate the many blessings that I have on any day. Because like my father always told me, ‘One day you can be on top of the world, and the next, the world can be on top of you.'”
