The people have spoken and they're certainly impressed by the Carolina Panthers.
12 Panthers finished in the top 2 at their position in Pro Bowl fan voting, led by quarterback Cam Newton, who narrowly missed winning the overall vote. The league's leading MVP candidate fell only 468 tallies short of Patriots quarterback Tom Brady for the title of top vote-getter. But the Panthers placed more players in the top 2 than any other team. The Patriots were closest with eight, the same number of guys the Panthers had at the top of their position groups, including outside linebacker Thomas Davis.
The fan vote counts for just one-third of what decides the selections. NFL players and coaches also get one-third of the total each. The Pro Bowl lineup will be announced next Tuesday night.
While doing well in the popularity contest is a nice for the Panthers, none of them are going to want to play in the Pro Bowl. They'll have an excused absence that week if they're getting ready for the Super Bowl.
