There’s one thing that keeps official team sites from steamrolling over the majority of media outlets that cover them. Objectivity.
It’s easy to understand why. Not only are team reporters paid by the organization they’re covering, but it’s just not natural to publicly criticize or question people who are technically your co-workers.
That’s why Geoff Hobson is so respected among NFL reporters. He’s not going to call for Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis to get fired after every loss. But Hobson, who left the Cincinnati Enquirer in 1999, is about as objective as a team’s reporter can get.
